June Lectures 2008
Note: This programme of lectures has now finished.
Castle Street is hosting two lectures in June. Both lectures start at 1930. Everyone is most welcome.
Moody and Sankey
Wednesday 11th June at 1930
Speaker: Rev Robert Dolman - minister of Castle Street Methodist Church
Music: Brian Carter - organist of Castle Street Methodist Church
This lecture takes the form of a musical evening in which we shall, with the aid of our organist, explore (and sing!) some of the American revivalist music associated with the Sacred Songs and Solos of Ira D Sankey.
Rev Robert Dolman will set these hymns and songs in their context in a short lecture on Moody and Sankey. This will provide a brief history of the partnership of the preacher and musician, assessing their significance and examining some of the themes that made them so popular.
The Church, Theology and Disability
Thursday 19th June at 1930
Speaker: Rev Michael Wilson - Superintendent minister of Cambridge Methodist Circuit
Bodies have always troubled the Christian church. For most of the time, we cope. But disability forces Christian theology to confront confusions that are hard-wired into its biblical foundations.
A very simple-sounding question we can all ask is 'Does my body please God as it is, or should it be different?' Is this the same question as 'Do I please God as I am, or should I be different?' ?
